Porto Alegre

Porto Alegre
260 E. Colorado Blvd.
Pasadena, CA
(626) 744-0555

This place is all about meat. Porto Alegre can be scary because of all the FOOD you can end up eating. The pictures are not in order but the first picture is the quail and duck.

Between tender loin, sirloin, skirt steak, and pork loin, and rib eye, i just got them all mixed up. sorry readers.

lamb chop!
Garlic ......I lost track again.
Tri-tip? Skirt steak? I lost track.
sausage!
BACON! Bacon wrapped Turkey, wrapped filet Mignon, wrapped pork loin.
Grilled chicken.
Finally, this is ONLY a SMALL selection of the items that the salad bar offers. You have to be there to see it all!
Shrimp Cocktail, asparagus, mushrooms, smoked salmon, fried banana.
Cheese ball. You must eat this when it arrives, before it cools down.
This restaurant also has a good selection of desserts, full bar, and Brahma, which is a Brazilian Beer.
This is my 2nd time to this restaurant, I decided to be smart and NOT overload my body with too much food and feel sick after. The best thing was the fact that it was a free meal, on the company.

I usually like salmon raw or smoked only. But this one caught my attention as I browsed through their glass of seafood salads, and other special dishes. This one is smoked Atlantic salmon, and at the same time they dunked it into a sweet candy mixture, the end result is a like eating Salmon candy. The texture is almost like tender beef jerky, yet the taste is juts perfect, lightly smoked, sweet, moist salmon.

Here's a closer look at the oil and the candy liquid from the smoked salmon. I recommend anyone to try this if you stop by the Ferry Building.

You can't go to S.F. and not eat fresh/raw seafood, at least if you are a seafood lover.
Super close up with an oyster.

They also sell raw clams, much more chewy than the oyster and it carries one unique flavor that is hard to describe. Some people would probably call it fishy, but its the flavor of this shellfish.

After the 1st round of oysters and clams, there were 2nds, then another trip back for more all in the same hour. At $1.50 a pop, this is a lot cheaper than other restaurants that serves excellent oysters like Hog island Oysters. We wanted to go there, but due to the fact that there were 5 or 6 parties ahead of us at hog Island Oysters and we had to rush down to San Jose in 2 hours, we chose to dig in at SF Fish Co. instead.

Grilled chicken with herbs. You can tell that this meat was marinated for a while before it was cooked, full flavor, and still tender.

Dungeness Crab Jambalaya
Crab meat, Chicken, shrimp, andouille sausage, mixed with white rice, a spicy treat. Great flavors from the rice to the chicken meat, even the garlic toast was a win. The only thing was the crab meat was very light on the flavor and did not give you the same taste when you crack it open from a shell and eat it like it was fresh.

FRIED SEAFOOD PLATTER
Calamari, shrimp, scallops, and white fish in breaded cornmeal, with fries.

2009.05.10 Food at Home

Well, I cheated, this is not homemade. I bought some Margaritaville brand

ISLAND LIME SHRIMP Oversized shrimp in a savory Caribbean Citrus Sauce.

http://www.margaritavillefoods.com/index.php?page=seafood

Takes 10 minues medium on a sauce pan and just let the sauce melt and cook!

My family made some Chinese sausage fried rice. Eggs, carrots, peas, salt, pepper, great combo with the shrimps!

Ika: Fresh Squids, has a special texture, just a bit slimy, sweet, and a little bit of a crunch as you bite into it. I don't even want rice with this, just plain is one of the best way to serve this!

Like I said earlier....you don't want to, well, I don't want to have sushi without UNI.

There are a few interesting ways to enjoy them.

1. Straight, with a light dip in soy sauce.

2. Add a few drops of lemon juice on it, which will reduce some of the Uni taste, but very refreshing.

3. Eat it sushi style.

4. $10 for the whole box!

At $60 a pound, this was one fish that melted in my mouth. Tuna Belly FAT is kind of hard to find. Surprizingly, we saw this at Mitsuwa Market. I quickly grabbed a pack to bring home to try it out! Ohtoro is the fattest part of the Tuna Belly. YUM. Omega-3 anyone?
http://www.mitsuwa.com/english/index.html

As expected, this fish was a burst of flavor, it totally melted in my mouth, others would say sensory overload. All that is left on the plate from the aftermath was drops of oil that remained. This one, I will try again and again.

2009.05.09 Kabuki

Kabuki Japanese Restaurant
3539 E Foothill BLVD.,
Pasadena, CA
(626) 351-8963

So after dinner tonight, we somehow were still hungry only after 1 hour from a Chinese restaurant, we decided to go grab a drink or two at a bar. Somehow some way we stumbled into Kabuki in Pasadena.

Endive Boat: Chopped Albacore, Tomato Salsa and Avocado. Served on Endive Leaf with Spicy Sauce. $9.95

This is the AAA Box Sushi: Albacore and Asparagus Layered in between with Avocado on Top. $13

This is the top view of the AAA box Sushi.

Hamachi Sake Box Sushi: Salmon and "Krab" Layered in between with Yellowtail on Top $13

This is the top view of the Hamachi Sake Box Sushi

Picture of Chu-Hi's that you can choose from.

We picked out the lychee flavor one. Sweet, bubbly, tangy, refreshing beverage.

I chose a bottle of unfiltered sweet sake. I like how they keep it chilled over ice for you now.
I drank a couple shot of it and thought it was pretty good, then realized it was way too sweet for me. Next time, it would be a dryer version of sake.

Sweet Shrimp: As usual, this special raw shrimp dish sits on a piece of rice, and some roe on top. Most restaurnats deep fry the head until it is crispy enough to eat, in this case, I had all of it. Too bad they ran out of UNI tonight. There is rarely a time we miss out on uni.
